Diuretics cause the kidneys to produce more urine.  One of the common side effects of the body and often a potassium supplement is required for long-term use of a diuretic.  Plant diuretics, on the other hands, often contain potassium in significant amounts, hence avoiding this potentially harmful side effect.    Bob McCauley, Master Herbalist
